Finally, because most of the world is now working from home, we’ve also included some tips below to help reduce the footprint of your home office situation.
#1 – switch to renewable energy at home using Big Clean Switch to compare deals available, you’ll be surprised at how much you can save
#2 – change your most-used bulbs to LEDs, these are 80% more efficient than standard CFL bulbs
#3 – make sure you’re recycling correctly by checking what can and can’t be recycled in your home (see recycle now)
#4 – switch to a flexitarian diet, eating less but better quality meat, and more vegetables and wholegrains. You can use our Planet Based Diets online tool to help
#5 – take shorter showers and think about your water footprint. Did you know the average shower dispenses 12 litres of water a minute?
#6 – turn devices off standby and chargers when not in use. When plugs are turned on they are still drawing power, even if it’s small it can soon add up
#7 – take more walks, drive less, explore the local nature around you – it’s great for our mental wellbeing and helps us value and take an interest in our local spaces
#8 – support local, small and independent businesses who need our help a lot more than large chains and corporations
#9 – make second-hand shopping your go-to. Check sites such as Thrift+ for clothes, World of Books, Oxfam books, eBay for everything and anything, and local sites such as Facebook marketplace and Nextdoor.co.uk (as well as hundreds of others).
#10 – check where your workplace pension is invested by asking your employer and your pension provider, and ask to switch to a planet-friendly fund
